Her highly textured collagraph printing plates were created by both cutting away and adding to the surface layer using anything from porridge oats to sand collected while walking on the beach. Richly coloured oil based inks are applied using rollers, cloth and paint brushes allowing for wonderful “happy accidents”. This also means that although prints are similar across a print run, each one is unique in various ways. Her work features scenes and landscapes of the south coasts and the New Forest area. At Chalks we enjoyed many years working with Sian. She has been making and designing for many years and has never lost the love of making a new design. The pieces have a romantic and emotive feel to create scenes and images, mainly made in recycled silver, gold and bronze also with natural gemstones. The New Forest is Jo Barry’s wonderland. She has lived there since 1994 and has never ceased to delight in the effects of light and weather on the ever subtly changing landscape. Her etchings can take up to six months from having the idea to printing the edition, which means work can start in one season and finish in another. An etching is not a reproduction. Each one is hand inked and printed by the artist. Because she is not a machine each one, numbered and signed, will be very slightly different from others in the edition. Inspiration comes from the countryside around her, the birds, flowers, animals and plants that can be glimpsed in the garden and beyond. Also evident is a love of the Mid-Century aesthetic. Scott started woodturning as a hobby in 2018. Although he has always enjoyed making “plain” wooden bowls, he soon started to include resin in his creations, to develop unique one-off pieces. Scott’s repertoire includes pens, bowls, platters, sphere desk clocks, vases and lidded ring pots. Most of Scott’s work utilises either wood sourced locally or wood that has been cut and left in hedgerows. She has always had an obsession with collecting unusual objects; that old pocket watch to the yellowed annuals, long discarded by their owners. These once treasured items have now been given a new lease of life through her sculptures. Each are encased in glass fronted boxes or glass domes, some of which tell a story of their own. Her main focuses is on fairy tales. With these sculptures Phillippa has developed a unique style using mixed media techniques. The reconstruction of these books, objects and paper is a lengthy process as the juxtaposition of each piece has to work effectively. Sue’s paintings are loosely inspired by landscape, not as literal depictions, but as intuitive and emotional responses to a place. This approach allows the work to feel open and atmospheric. These are all materials that inspire her to create all kinds of boats and some very strange sea creatures! She does it because she loves it, its eco friendly and makes people smile! She finds that clay is an amazing medium for experimentation, and she has loved playing with clays and glazes over the last couple of years. Inspired by nature, she recreates organic forms from the forest floor. Mainly focusing on fungi, gastropods, butterflies and moths her aim is to create a variation of wildlife-based pieces, including bell jar sculpted scenes, wall mounted creations and freestanding sculptures, often featuring her speciality; her favourite snails and slugs of different species found around the world.
