Jo uses a mixture of realism and abstraction in her art to capture both the physical and emotional essence of a place. Jo creates atmospheric art prints, handcrafted lampshades and homewares featuring her designs. Her highly textured collagraph printing plates were created by both cutting away and adding to the surface layer using anything from porridge oats to sand collected while walking on the beach. Richly coloured oil based inks are applied using rollers, cloth and paint brushes allowing for wonderful “happy accidents”. This also means that although prints are similar across a print run, each one is unique in various ways. Her work features scenes and landscapes of the south coasts and the New Forest area. At Chalks we enjoyed many years working with Sian. Since taking early retirement from teaching many years ago this has become his main occupation. He enjoys making very large, hand thrown stoneware storage vessels, chargers, bowls and pitchers and jugs with beautiful luxurious glazes. He spends several months each year in New Zealand whenever possible, visiting potters groups and numerous potter friends. He has done many demonstrations around the country and spent time as an Artist in Residence at Driving Creek Railway and Potteries in the Coromandel. Originally from Norfolk she moved to Dorset eight years ago and she designs and makes a wide range of work which always incorporates colour, pattern and quirky details. Inspiration comes from the countryside around her, the birds, flowers, animals and plants that can be glimpsed in the garden and beyond. Also evident is a love of the Mid-Century aesthetic. Scott started woodturning as a hobby in 2018. Although he has always enjoyed making “plain” wooden bowls, he soon started to include resin in his creations, to develop unique one-off pieces. Scott’s repertoire includes pens, bowls, platters, sphere desk clocks, vases and lidded ring pots. Most of Scott’s work utilises either wood sourced locally or wood that has been cut and left in hedgerows. All her pieces are entirely hand built without the use of a potter’s wheel, using flat slabs of clay that are carefully shaped and built up during the forming process. Megan’s inspiration comes from her own love of handmade ceramics and a desire to produce simple, functional forms that would make a beautiful and practical addition to anyone’s home. She is now a glass artist living and working in Surrey. Working using fused glass methods, she uses recycled window glass to create her work. Nature is a recurring theme in her pieces, adding her unique graphic twist, making her work recognisable and unique to her. All her pieces are hand painted using techniques developed over years of experimenting with different fired paints to achieve a variety of effects. It is a treasure hunt! She never knows what she may find or what it will eventually become. She has worked from her Hampshire studio since 2001 where she is surrounded by piles of driftwood, boxes of plastic, glass, rusty metal, old rope and fishing floats. These are all materials that inspire her to create all kinds of boats and some very strange sea creatures! She does it because she loves it, its eco friendly and makes people smile! Her hand tools become an extension of her imagination and she can spend endless hours looking for that perfect piece of glass or just the right rusty nail. Cathy and Lisa work together to design and create original fusion glass pieces. Their Kaleidoscope range reminisces childhood memories of sunny days and the magical images created within a Kaleidoscope. In the same way that a Kaleidoscope forever changes its unique forms and colour patterns, they too have developed a technique for creating this in each of their glass pieces. No two creations will ever have the same colours and shapes. They start life on the wheel and are then decorated with coloured slips which are hand painted, trailed or sponged on to the leather hard clay. Paper-resist and sgraffito techniques are used to highlight her lively and light-hearted designs which are all one-offs. The pots have a final firing with a clear glaze. Summer sailing along the south coast provides the inspiration for the quaysides, boats, sea birds and fish which feature in much of her work. Through meeting with fellow artists and attending a range of glass masterclasses, Michelle has developed a nuanced understanding of glass chemistry and fusion techniques. Growing up on a farm in North Devon with unspoilt nature all around really inspired Faye at a young age to capture what she sees and feels through her love of painting. Now living along the amazing Dorset coast, she continues to be inspired with the beautiful landscape and animals within it. Using only recycled 925 sterling silver, gold, seaglass, and natural stones, Jules ensures zero waste by melting down all leftover metal for new creations. Jules takes pride in sourcing beautiful seaglass primarily from the stunning beaches of the UK, the majority is lovingly gathered along the picturesque South coast. He produces linocut prints of landscapes and wildflowers, mischievous birds and playful animals. Inspired by his wanderings of country lanes, dappled woodland and windswept cliff tops, he develops these observations into scenes that tell a story of rural life as if in a bygone era. His colour palette - colours of a vintage railway poster - evokes the countryside in vivid hues and tones. These colours are a hazy meadow, a sea thrift and a squally sea. She has worked in design for nearly 20 years specialising in designing Holograms for brand and currency. 5 years ago she started a pottery class in her local town for a few hours a week and got completely hooked on clay. She finds that clay is an amazing medium for experimentation, and she has loved playing with clays and glazes over the last couple of years. Each piece is made individually from sheet and wire, with a focus on structure, balance and proportion. Influenced by a background in graphic design, her work brings together clean lines and considered forms. Some whites and browns interact producing atmospheric colour mixes. His current work focuses on functional ware including bowls, lidded containers and jugs. Her paintings hover between the real and the imagined. A former graphic designer, This background informs her confident use of colour and structure across her painterly surfaces. Her work aims to be uplifting bringing joy and a sense of place to the viewer. Ed’s semi abstract style of painting captures towns in Dorset and the Southwest coastline with a graphic approach. He works in acrylics on canvas and uses a limited colour palette outlined with ink using a pipette pen. The selection for this exhibition is a collection depicting Lymington and the surrounding area. Carefully considering colour, texture, shape and pattern, she creates jewellery in cohesive collections, always with a subtly present coastal theme. After studying ceramics at Falmouth and running a small studio in Cornwall, Sally returned to her home in the New Forest. Although having not practicing ceramics for a several years, creativity has always played a big part of Sally’s life, until the clay drew her back in about 10 years ago. The local environment and bounty of wildlife has been the main inspiration for Sally’s work, which is constantly evolving and changing much like the seasons. Nicole fuses her passion for jewellery with her love of living beside the sea, creating pieces inspired by the beautiful Dorset coastline. Nicole welcomes bespoke commissions and will happily use your own sea glass to create the perfect piece of jewellery to capture those special memories of sandy toes, salty waves and sea breezes. As well as incorporating sea glass handpicked from our shores, she also uses ethically and responsibly sourced gemstones and recycled precious metals. Nicole donates £1 from every sale in support of the Marine Conservation Society, registered charity 1004005. Working primarily in the medium of linocut, Nicole creates mysterious, thought-provoking and emotionally engaging linocut prints. Within her work she examines the connections between people and place; often dealing with the female experience, that weave together themes of nature, climate, and the human connection we have to our environment. Her style is a fresh and modern twist on traditional printmaking techniques. She creates small batch limited edition prints in both monochromatic and reduction linocut, and products printed with her unique designs. She creates all her work in her home studio in Dorset and prints on a Gunning etching press. Kate is a self-taught artist who has been printing and teaching for 5 years. Her love of bold colour and detailed mark marking gives her a varied style; moving between detailed one block prints and colourful multi-plate images. Amanda makes dichroic glass cabochons by layering dichroic and bullseye glass and fusing it in her kiln. Some of the more complex pieces are then cut from mosaic glass slabs before they have a final fire polish in the kiln. Nicky is a painter who also designs fabric and dabbles in ceramics. After completing her masters back in 2017, Nicky pursued showcasing her work in local galleries and exhibitions as well as teaching classes and workshops around Dorset. Caroline began her professional career in a print and embroidery studio based in London creating designs for high street fashion. She later went on to develop her own brand of products and now specialises in acrylic and watercolour artworks. Denise’s work reflects her love of nature and Dorset’s wildlife, which in turn gives her great inspiration. On her many walks along Dorset’s coastline she collects interesting natural materials, that she then incorporates into her work. She is a big advocate of saving items from landfill and will occasionally combine these items into her work. Her favourite medium to work with is driftwood that she either leaves natural or paints with acrylic paint to give a more lifelike look. It has only been recently her discovery of needle felting has allowed her to explore her talent in a very unique way. She is inspired by pattern, colour and textures. Her statement jewellery combines textured silver with colourful aluminium, birch plywood and walnut. Pieces are created using various techniques from hand painting and printing to digitally created designs and dip dyeing. Her work has a textured and organic exterior; the inside is often, by contrast, smooth and glazed, as are the rims of vessels, making them fully functional items. She often creates work that bridges the gap between functionality and sculpture.
